Music - Lead: Mr Kiddle

At St Michael’s CE VA Primary School, we want our children to be passionate about music and get enjoyment and excitement from the subject. Music is a tool for personal expression, and we believe it can play an important part in the personal development of pupils as individuals. We aim to encourage children’s curiosity as they ask questions and explore the role of music in different cultures and societies around the world.

At St Michael’s CE VA Primary School, we aim to foster a love of singing which we believe is important for both physical and mental wellbeing as well as broadening spiritual, moral, social, and cultural awareness.  It also plays an important part in helping children feel part of a community.  Furthermore, we aim to provide opportunities for performance as we believe these play an important role in building children’s self-belief, self-confidence, and resilience.

We use the Charanga scheme of work to deliver Music across school allowing us to fully cover the National Curriculum, ensuring that pupils make progress in an integrated, practical, and exploratory approach to musical learning. Charanga provides a repetition-based approach; learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills, which we have found works well for our children.  Children experience a wide range of musical styles with opportunities to listen, perform, compose, and improvise in engaging and challenging lessons.
