Christian Vision and Values

‘Do to Others as You Would Want Them to Do to You’

At St Michael’s Church of England Primary School, Lyme Regis, as a small seaside school, we cherish our close-knit community where every child is known, valued, and supported to flourish.

We are on a journey of growth and improvement, and our vision is clear: We aim for all our children to grow in character, embrace new learning, take on responsibilities, and face challenges with great attention, through thinking harder with courage and kindness.

We want every child to experience the richness of life in all its fullness, not just through academic achievement, but through meaningful relationships, personal growth, and a deep sense of belonging.

Just as Jesus encouraged his disciples to look beyond their present and dream of something greater, we encourage our children to aspire to be the best version of themselves—kind, respectful, honest, compassionate, and trustworthy. We want every day at St Michael’s to be filled with joy, purpose, and positive engagement, thinking harder, with learning, with one another, and with the wider community and world.

Our guiding principle, taken from Luke 6:31 “Do to others as you would want them to do to you,” shapes our ethos and daily life. It reminds us to treat others with kindness, empathy, and respect, and to build a community rooted in love and mutual care.

To help us live out this calling, our school community has chosen five core values that guide everything we do:

Respect: valuing ourselves and others, and treating everyone with dignity.

Honesty: being truthful and trustworthy in all we say and do.

Kindness: showing care and empathy in our actions.

Compassion: celebrating diversity and reaching out to those in need.

Trust: building strong, supportive relationships rooted in faith and integrity.

These values help us create a school where children feel safe, loved, and inspired to grow into confident, compassionate individuals ready to make a difference in the world.

Our Biblical Foundation

‘Do to others as you would have them to do to you.’

Our Vision

What We Want for Our Children

At our school, we believe in treating others with kindness, respect, and care, just as we would like to be treated ourselves.

Guided by this vision, we aim to give every child:

  • A love of learning helping children enjoy discovering new things every day
  • High quality teaching and learning making sure lessons are exciting, clear, and help every child grow
  • A rich and balanced curriculum offering a wide range of subjects and experiences to spark curiosity and creativity.
  • Support to be their best, encouraging children to aim high and believe in themselves
  • A caring environment where every child feels safe, valued, and listened to
  • Strong friendships and teamwork help children learn how to live well with others
  • Respect everyone, celebrate differences and treat everyone with dignity
  • Loe and kindness every day, making sure every child knows they matter and belong.

Our Christian values and how we see them in action in school

As a school, a community, we have developed our shared Vision and Values. Our children asked questions to show how these might be seen in action in our school; how they are lived out.

TRUST

Proverbs 11: 3 – You can put confidence in someone who is trustworthy.

  • What makes a friend trustworthy?
  • Why is it important to be able to trust people in your class/ community?
  • How do we learn to trust one another?
  • What could you do if a friend betrayed your trust or let you down?
  • How can you show that you are trustworthy?
  • What do Christians mean when they speak about 'trusting God in all things'?

RESPECT

1 Peter 2.17 – Show respect for all people. Love the brothers and sisters of God’s family. Respect God.

  • Who do you respect and why?
  • How can you show respect for someone with whom you disagree?
  • Which role models do you admire and why?
  • Can you think of some stories about Jesus that demonstrate his respect for the people he met?

HONESTY

Ephesians 4. 25 – Everyone must tell the truth to fellow-believers, because we are all members together.

  • Sometimes we are tempted to lie to get out of trouble or make ourselves look better. Why is it important to tell the truth?
  • How do you feel when somebody lies to you?
  • Is it important to always tell the truth?
  • Who helps you decide what is right and wrong?
  • When some Christians find it difficult to make a decision, they ask themselves the question “What would Jesus do?” Why do you think this is helpful?

KINDNESS

Acts 28:2- It was raining and very cold. But the people who lived there were very good to us. They made us a fire and welcomed all of us.

  • When you think of kindness, what comes to mind?
  • How can you show kindness to others?
  • How did the kindness of God appear?
  • Besides giving us salvation, what are some other ways God has shown us kindness?

COMPASSION

Psalm 86.15 – But you, O Lord, are a God who shows mercy and is kind. You don’t become angry quickly, you have great love and faithfulness.

  • If you met someone who was really compassionate, how would you know?
  • If you show someone kindness and care about how that makes them feel? How do you think you would feel?
  • How could you help someone who was being “left out” of a game or other activity?
  • Do you know a story that Jesus told about someone who showed compassion?
  • Can you think of a time when Jesus showed compassion to those around him?

The logo of St. Michael's CE Primary School beautifully reflects our Christian values and vision.

The church window design symbolises our foundation in faith, while the sailboat on water represents the journey of learning and growth that each child undertakes.

The yellow path leading to the boat suggests guidance and purpose, the faint cross in the sky reminds us of the presence of faith in all we do.

The ammonite shell; a beautiful spiral that grows outward in circles. Each part of the spiral represents something special:

🌀 The centre is you—your thoughts, feelings, and questions.

🌀 The next layer is your search for meaning—wondering why things happen and what makes life important.

🌀 The outer layers show your connection to something bigger—like nature, love, family, or even a sense of peace.

Just like the ammonite grows in a spiral, spirituality is about growing and discovering more about yourself and the world around you.

Together, these elements express our commitment to nurturing every child in a safe, inspiring, and spiritually rich environment.

Spirituality

At St Michael’s, we believe that spirituality is a vital part of every child’s development. As a Church of England school, our vision “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31) guides us in creating a nurturing environment where every child can flourish in mind, body, and soul.

Spirituality is threaded into the fabric of our school life. It’s not confined to Religious Education or Collective Worship; it influences all areas of learning and living. We provide rich opportunities for deep thinking, reflection, and exploration across the curriculum, helping children to ask big questions, seek meaning, and grow in empathy, compassion, and self-awareness.

For our children, Spirituality means trying to understand what makes life special, finding your own purpose, and feeling connected to something bigger than just yourself—like nature, love, or kindness.

We understand that spiritual development is personal and unique. It’s not dependent on religious belief, but rather on the ability to reflect, to wonder, and to connect with something greater than ourselves. It might be found in a moment of awe in nature, a piece of music that moves us, a story that inspires, or a quiet time of stillness and peace.

At St Michael’s, we nurture spirituality in many ways:

  • We live out and celebrate our Trust and Christian values of Love, Hope, and Joy
  • We create space for peace and reflection throughout the school day
  • We isit and worship in special places, including St Michael’s Church and other local places of worship
  • We encourage respectful questioning and open dialogue, helping children feel safe to explore life’s big ideas
  • We foster a loe of creation through our school grounds and outdoor learning, including the beautiful and inspiring Jurassic coast
  • We support children in understanding and managing their emotions, helping them build resilience and inner strength.

Spiritual learning at St Michael’s is about helping every child discover who they are, what they believe, and how they can live a life of purpose, peace, and joy. It’s a journey we take together, rooted in faith, guided by love, and open to all.
